Why the restriction on news on CR and FM stations? India’s SC asks govt

Hearing a PIL challenging the restriction on broadcast of news on Community Radio and private FM stations, the Supreme Court issued notice to the government to respond why such radio stations be not allowed to broadcast news.

The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notice to the central government on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by a voluntary organisation that sought news to be broadcast on private FM radio channels.
The apex court bench headed by Chief Justice P. Sathasivam, hearing the plea, asked: “How can you (the government) restrict FM radio channels from broadcasting news, as community radio channels are easily accessible.”

Lawyer Prashant Bhushan appeared on behalf of the NGO Common Cause, which has questioned bar on broadcast of news on private FM radio channels.
